Stupid High IQ societies

After following some link, I stumbled upon this page called the “International High IQ society”. Apparently you need to take a test and get higher than 124 to join the society. I did give it a shot and scored a respectable 148. And then it gives me the sign up link, I spend ten minutes filling in the damn form, and submitted it and it asks me to pay anywhere between 90 and 500 dollars for the membership. Now I was turned off by this fact. Not because it requires monetary inputs, but because I started thinking how many great intellectuals would’ve probably reached this stage, and decided it probably wasn’t important enough. Because if they had, then the overall capital available to the society would be considerably higher, and the price wouldn’t be so relatively high. And I’m probably not the only one who feels that way. How many might’ve thought along the same lines.

In effect, the very intelligentsia that this society is out to unite is the sole purpose of the difficulty of their existence. But it’s one really good test though. I’d recommend giving the TA3 a shot.

Also I did some searching about these societies, and found this was among the lowest ranked society, for their acceptance criterion apparently. There are many of these societies, all with different acceptance levels.

The most amusing, however, remained reading about the Giga Society, a society for people who scores above 190, and the website claims

Giga Society is open to anyone scoring at or above the 99.9999999th estimated unselected population percentile on any of the acceptable tests. This means one in a billion individuals can qualify. The corresponding IQ, expressed on a scale with a set standard deviation of 16, is 196, respectively sd 15, an IQ 190. There are currently six Giga members.

I for one, welcome our new Giga Overlords.

The thing that’s going on in my mind is what would happen if I pitt these folks against the people who write in digg comment threads.

Update: I’ve applied for the mensa test, since there are local branches it should be easier for me to fit in. The test’s gonna be soon I reckon.

  • Hmm.. tempts me to take one of those…might be later!!!

  • The members of these societies do not claim to be overlords. Also, there are many that charge no membership fee(s).

“In effect, the very intelligentsia that this society is out to unite is the sole purpose of the difficulty of their existence.”

Your tautological summary relies on the presumption that the intelligentsia have difficult existences. While they may feel somewhat isolated, this does not necessarily translate into misery. To the contrary of your unsubstantiated claim, most of the intelligentsia are very well-adjusted and happy individuals.

  • The truth is that anyone can create IQ society, so as you can find good or bad restaurants you can find good and bad IQ societies or you will choose the one which fits your needs.

  • Anirudh,

The most important criteria for being in an IQ Society is to be magnanimous and generous. It comes with the territory.

Most people who claim and have been been tested for high IQ of sorts could very well be one-sided about everything in life, like money.

The point of IHIQS emphasis seems to be the g factor.

  • You come to an IQ Society to contribute something, that’s what is all about.

  • yeah. I guess so. I reckon I’ll definitely join one of these sooner or later. I’m also applying for the mensa test, will see how that goes.

  • High IQs create all the world’s wealth, so the people in power have to humiliate us so we can become meek Cash Cows. These groups are full of crippled, castrated Patsies of Parasites. They are escapist, self-deluded traitors. It is our duty to confiscate their Masters’ stolen wealth through infiltration, sabotage, etc. It was not enough to refuse to cure cancer for these corporate patent-thieves and the ungrateful rabble; we must cause cancer.

We demand (1) an end to childhood nerdbashing through a Team/Reward form of education, (2) $600 a week plus free tuition in order to get us to go to college, (3) 50% of our corporate patents or else we will embezzle them. In fact, we must wage all-out war on the people in power–these demands are what the Parasites have to do to get us to quit destroying them. Never believe a thing you are taught, especially that we have opportunities in this Homo Erectus world. We are a new species and must be permanently hostile to the illegitimate owners of the world.

  • Inside the IHIQS you will find a vast array of subjects being discussed by people who have the same interests as you. People from different countries share knowledge to one another to attain more enlightenment or just to have a broader overview of such matter. Being part of such societies does not constitute competition or self-fulfillment; it is merely a place where you find people with the same interests, such as country clubs, etc. If you feel like being part of such just to have bragging rights or testing higher than others then I would suggest you, not to be part of such organizations.

  • Maybe I should also create my own “high IQ society”. You can solve my tests and pay me $500 for putting your name in my list of “smart people”. Because that’s what intelligent people do — pay money to some unknown person in internet! ;-)

  • The International High IQ Society has a lifetime membership fee of 79 dollars; not 90 to 500. The form takes a minute to fill out.

  • I have recently closed out my account at IHIQS after several years of membership. I am not knowledgeable about psychometrics. The tests at IHIQS seem to be pretty good, however, compared to most online tests of this sort. My disenchantment with IHIQS is rooted in the culture of the forum. Certain individuals are singled out for mistreatment almost from the get-go. Anyone who complains about this is chided for being “overly sensitive”. It seems to me that cyber bullying is not only tolerated there, but actively encouraged. One of the most offensive Internet trolls I have ever encountered has recently been reinstated as a member for the third time. Although the Users’ Guidelines state that one can be ejected from IHIQS for various inappropriate behaviors, expulsion is not necessarily permanent and, therefore, means little to nothing. Upon learning that the troll in question had been readmitted and upon finding out that this individual had resurrected a six-year-old thread to attack me and other female members, I requested that my account be shut down. IHIQS has been called a “vanity operation” by some of its critics. This is mild compared to what I think IHIQS is: a place where certain poor suckers, starved for validation of their intellect, pay to be bullied online. My two bits: Do not join! The good, intelligent discussions are overwhelmed by the spats and exchanges of insults (which invariably focus on body parts and body functions). IHIQS is, by and large, a juvenile forum.
