They started in 1978, going on to become one of the top 5 metal bands in the world. They’ve been everywhere, done everything and are a benchmark for all musicians today. they were responsible for starting the new wave of british heavy metal.

I’m talking of course, about Iron Maiden, or as they are to many, a god and a religion. They are my favourite band and I’ve heard all their songs from all their albums. Timeless classics which still have the charm the millionth time you listen to them like Powerslave and Aces High and The Nomad.
Brave new world is my favourite album, but after this album, they released “Edward the Great” another “best of” album. A newer version of “best of the beast” but after this, something happened. Dance of death featured a lot more strings and classical elements.
I am a huge sucker for strings and I actually kindof liked Dance of Death, especially some great songs like Montsegour and Paschendale and Rainmaker, you couldn’t go wrong. I was eagerly itching to catch hold of the new album A matter of life and death, but after I heard it, I was scared that maiden was well… not maiden anymore. Shocked, I just stopped listening to it and went back to rime of the ancient mariner. But during the vacation, I forced myself to return and listen to the whole thing and this is what I felt.
I heard it and this is what I felt: musically it’s a great album. If it was just some new rock band with some new kind of music I would actually give it a weird thumbs up. But for gods’ sakes where are the riffs, the riffs like wicker man and Flash of the Blade. And where oh where are the solos. Please will someone explain to me is that little guitar like piece supposed to be a solo. Even dance of death had great solos. Dickenson is as usual, godlike with his vocals, but I was real dissapointed at what the rest of the band is upto. What’s with the great titans nowadays. Metallica was dead ages ago, slayer is well…. slayer without the amazing riffs, megadeth’s system has failed kindof failed and now the last metal band I hoped would deliver is now down.
Well, atleast there’s still priest, angel of retribuion isn’t that bad. Once I’,m finished with “Matter of life and death” I’ll write a detailed review later.
