A Midsemester Night’s Dream - Pt.1

One of the most interesting memories I’ve had of my first year hall is the amount people used to study. People hoping to top the exams and change their branch. Before the exams the corridors was alit with activity at five in the morning. At that time, there was a force that compelled everyone (but me) to study their asses off. That force made people score exceptionally well and put them ahead in “Life”. Now, as a second year, that force has completely vanished. Or rather, the fear, has vanished. The funny part is that nobody’s bothered anymore and even a week before the exams started people were doing all sorts of junk. Being a person with below-average grades, and thus, “intelligence”, I thought I’d pull a fast one on them and get a head start. I knew it’d fail, but it was worth a shot.

I sat. I sat in front of the book in front of the first page, and seldom made any progress. When the exams drew nearer, I grew worried, not because I would have to study 40 hours a day to complete the portions, but that I had no concentration at all. So I thought of the most radical idea and asked my good friend, Google for hypnotism tools. I found something that looked very promising. So I got it and it didn’t work. So I decided to go on a more radical path. I drew a dot on the wall, and stared at it for half an hour, clearing all the thoughts in my head. And at the end of it, my productivity increased hundredfold.

Now came the time to tackle the other problem-time, or rather, my lack of it. Fueled by frequent shots of coffee and heavy metal, I managed to pull off with 3-4 hours of sleep a day for 3 days. And now that I’ve gotten a few hours to breathe, the first thing I did was to sleep.

Stay I’ll write part 2 tommorow or soon about how all my exams went.

My first virus attack

My adventures with antivirus. *yawn*, click on the downward pointing arrow on your scrollbar for more interesting posts.

For some reason, I’d never been a victim to virus attacks, even when I didn’t have antivirus. The funny part is I started using antivirus anyways. I usually used norton but then I moved on to zone and then finally to avg. But avg looked real sad. So after I reinstalled, I got hold of Kaspersky and installed it, which worked real well. It apparently had great disinfection features and I tweaked it so it won’t interfere in my life much. The only bad part is that I’d set a morderately large file for download and gone to sleep, and for waking up, I use my computer as an alarn clock, and I wake up to the sweet sound of slayer every morning. So when the download was over and kaspersky found a virus, it played a horrible painful hellfull sound, that almost gave me a heart attack when it woke me up. I’ve listen to norwegian black metal and that’s the worst, but nothing comes close to that sound of some evil mutated virus-like animal.

But anyways, for some reason I turned it off today evening and I didn’t use the net cause it was not working though I might’ve downloaded somthing off my college lan filesharing network, but when I re-enabled kaspersky, I got plenty of alerts claiming that it’s been infected with hidrag and plassma. Apparently svchost was also infected and it had to follow some special procedure. So I’m just running a full system scan right now and writing to kill time after which I’ll set it for defragmentation and re-indexing and system maintainance and sleep till 2 in the morning(it’s 10 in the night now), and then study before going to the exam, where i’ll be fkd for sure.

yay! scan finished. viruses only in sysmanger.exe and svchost.exe

Rime of the Ancient Mariner

I’m very sleepy right now and am posting only because I’m bored and only for the sake of posting. If you’re looking for something to read, click here or skip this post.

Well, it’s 4 in the morning and things are looking good in classical mech. I have test from 8:30 in the morning. If I can stay awake till then, it’ll be fine. Considering that I slept from 5-9 yesterday, I might fall asleep soon. I want to go to cheddis and grab some coffee and something to eat, and I will in an hour or so. Apart from that the studying’s going reasonably well and the other following things happened.

I had a HUGE flamewar on mutter. More on this when there is time.

nothing more. I’ll write something substantial soon. I promise.

ps. I couldn’t think of a title, so I put the name of the song which was playing.

Me and Studying

A quote from Dream Theater, though, in the wrong context, but it does the trick.

“I may never find all the answers,
I may never understand why,
I may never prove, what I know to be true,
But I know that I still have to try”
-From “The Spirit Carries On”

Kill-Switch

Well, it’s 4:30 and I’m back from class, and I have two hours free. I can either:
a. Watch a small movie
b. Watch tom and jerry, again
c. It’s raining and I’m too tired, so I can’t go outside.
d. I could write an incredibly long blog post
e. I could check out the latest happenings on digg

AAAAH, screw all that.
I’m sleeping for two hours.

September 11th @ 12:04 AM

Warning: This post contains traces of academics. Academics are highly toxic and should be handled carefully and only when the situation demands it.

Well, I was trying to study for the Design and Analysis of Algorithms test that’s all set to attack in about 10 hours. As I’ve spent most of the day studying, I’m real frustrated and hungry, and what better way to commemorate the fifth aniversary of 9/11 than blogging about how frustrated and hungry I am and what I’m studying for.

Let’s turn up the toxicity dial shall we?
I’m studying from Cormen’s Introduction to Algorithms. I’m reading about HeapSort, and I want to be done before 2.AM. I have class at 7 in the morning. Why did I spend my whole fricking day studying Kinetic Theory, or atleast, try to study it. I hate this. WAAAAAH.

I’m wasting time right now. eight minutes down the drain.

I seldom use smileys, but here goes:  :(

Are they still EVIL?

This article is very pro-Microsoft. If you hate technology or Microsoft, this article will offend you and please comment saying it did so. IF you honestly do not care, comment nevertheless :P

http://www.microsoft.com/MAX/images/graphic_newsScreen.jpgI personally don’t have anything against microsoft, but lately, I’ve been favouring them. Their Desktop Blog editing tool, Windows Live Writer, which I’m using right now, is one of the best applications I’ve used, let alone blog editor. Now what’s funny, is that:
For more screenshots:Click Here

  1. It’s free.
  2. It has an open API so has many plugins are available for it.
  3. It’s microsoft.

Now, I just opened up digg and I see this article about microsoft’s feed reader. Microsoft’s products, office, or whatever are very elaborate, though expensive, but this was free. I checked the reader out and it was love at first sight. It had the brilliant office 2007(or office 12) interface system that’ll fit well with vista. It is mainly a picture organizer, with many features. It’s sort of a picasa and a feed reader put together. It is called microsoft MAX.(www.microsoft.com/max). I’ll let you check the features out.

I see where microsoft is heading with this. This, live writer and most of their new apps have an open API(Automated programming interface or something like that) which means that people can easily write programs that enhance their features. This more importantly means that microsoft programs enhance each other. Even Internet Explorer 7 has a new open API, and has a site dedicated to addons (www.ieaddons.com). Now I’m expecting that Vista will see all these put together and seamless interactivity. I would really love to see something like that. Making vista more open could seriously pose a threat to Linux.

Microsoft seems to be going the google way by not being evil to get more money. IE7 is a mile ahead of IE6, when firefox 2 is hardly any different from firefox 1.5, and microsoft’s moves are looking good.

But as for the blog reader, though it’s good and intuitive and strong, I’ll stick to my current feed reader mainly because:

  1. This new feed reader doesen’t offer anything NEW. It’s just better interface and better graphics coupled with .net Framework 3.0 betarc1.
  2. My current reader, FeedDemon, has a few nice features that can be added as plugins, but absent nevertheless.
  3. MAX is mainly an image editing and desktop reader. Stupid stupid microsoft made it one application. I don’t know why, they’re unreleated. If the reader was standalone, I’d probably get it.
  4. It’s 54 fu*ing mb, and the net speed sucks right now.
  5. And last but most important, I have exams I need to study. I’m sorry but I don’t have time to install, troubleshoot, subscribe compare and type.

Sorry Microsoft.
Better Luck Next time.

In Soviet Russia, Blog reads YOU!!!

I was incredibly bored when writing this, so it’s probably crap, that shouldn’t stop you from reading it. :)

In Soviet Russia, Kinetic Theory tries to study you. (my creation)

In Soviet Russia, funny caption writes YOU!!

In Soviet Russia, n00b pwns you.
In Soviet Russia, link clicks on YOU!!!
In Soviet Russia, Google Searches YOU!!
In Soviet Russia, Yoda like YOU speaks!! (I love this one)

Anyways, I was just having some fun with Russian Reversals, they’re all set to be the next in thing here in kgp, and an honorable mention to rushin.

Anyways, I spent most of my time today studying for the god-forsaken midsemester exams that are all set to pounce and sink their blood dripping teeth into my soft, unprepared flesh.

I spent five hours trying to study and can honestly certify not a word has entered my head. Well, Gotta get back to mugging now.

For the uninitiated:

“The Russian Reversal is a debating and argumentative tactic developed by the USSR during the twentieth century. A tool described as being able to end and subsequently win any discussion, its original intent was to stupefy capitalist dogs by inverting the sentence and introducing a new prepositional phrase, thus obfuscating the topic and allowing the debater to take control and bury his opponent. Its execution is as simple as it is lethal: the subject and direct object of the sentence in question are reversed, the sentence is preceded with “in Soviet Russia” and all sentences are shifted into the second person.”

AAAAH, stoopid stoopid me

A testament to how confused I get. After attending class at 8:30-9:30, I had time off till 1:30, when I had a lab. So i took a little nap, after which I woke up. Now I woke up, without looking at the time properly. I checked the time, and ran finding everyone leaving the institute in full force. Hmmmmm…wierd, must be something wrong, go inside, empty. Hmmmm… was there a bomb hoax? What then? Nevermind, all the classroom doors was locked. I got to the lab to find it locked. Hmmmm… something fishy, but the day is off. Yipeee!!!

So I go back and catch up on my sleep for a couple of hours and wake up at 3:30. And then I just go to play some music when I see the computer’s showing the time as 2:30, and I see that my wallclock is one hour ahead for some reason. The reason everyone were leaving was because of lunch, and all the rooms were closed. I ran to the lab and profusely apologised, and after some explanation, the professor allowed me to go to class.

In other news, I’ve stepped up my studying to full force, which I shall do now, and write something elaborate tommorow.

Worries

I’m talking about myself here. Though I don’t generally whine, once I start, I can be extremely boring. Read at your own risk.

Lately I’ve been worried I’ve been getting quite an attitude problem. I did things that I’d never do. I refused to do things that are supposedly mandatory, and worse, I questioned them. I questioned traditions and disappointed many. I stood up for myself in front of people I’m answerable to, and what’s worse, I fought for justice. This is quite unlike me, but it’s what I always wanted to be all the time, but not able to get out. I’ve always tried to be in everyone’s good books, trying to make up when I go wrong and apologising at every step.

Well, I know some people who I know will disprove, but I’m now done being a pushover. I’m ready to leave behind roadkill, that doesen’t mean that I’ll lose touch of my sensitive side.

In short, my middle finger’ll be in it’s holster ready to be drawn.

The hardest part is that I don’t want to relapse into my old ways. I have to keep telling myself, “you don’t give a f*** about that anymore, remember?”

And please people, if your read this, and you know me, please comment. I get about 40 hits a day, but no comments from anyone.
